SULEMAN KHAN- VISUAL ARTIST

Suleman Khan is a professional artist and sculptor based in Ontario, Canada. Belonging to the indigenous Baluch tribe in the Baluchistan province of Pakistan, Khan grew up watching the sufferings and fear of his people with a constant lack of security in the region. Wether he paints in acrylics, watercolours and inks or sculpts using unconventional materials like barbed wires and nails, his work allows him to explore the challenges and discrimination faced by his community in their own homeland. Through his work, Khan invites the viewers to experience or get a glimpse of the misery and pain suffered by his indigenous tribal community and hopes to spark a peaceful conversation that may help bring harmony in the region.

In common with other indigenous people, the Baluch also feel that their land and territory have been taken over by outsiders who are politically and economically more powerful. There is a lack of security in the region and the ugly politics has taken thousands of innocent lives, leaving their families and loved ones suffer with no information on the forced disappearances.

As an indigenous child and many other children like him, face discrimination in their homes and cannot walk about freely. If anyone tries to voice out their feelings, they could be forcefully disappeared and tortured or executed. Their family will keep looking for them and suffer in pain.

Khan's work revolves around incidents he grew up experiencing with a constant fear of loosing his family or friends.

"Watching so many unfortunate incidents unfold, there comes a point when you stop asking questions to even yourself. My intention is to keep exploring and asking myself questions through my art."

"Through my art, I aim to give awareness to the world of the issues faced by Baluch people and create a peaceful dialogue with possibilities of a happy future for next generations."
